Carrier mean free path and temperature imbalance in mesoscopic wires

چکیده
Non-coherent electronic transport in metallic nanowires exhibits different carrier temperatures for the non-equilibrium forward and backward populations in the presence of electric fields. Depending on the mean free path that characterizes interbranch carrier backscattering transport regimes vary between the ballistic and diffusive limits. In particular, we show that the simultaneous measurements of the electrical characteristics and the carrier distribution function offer a direct way to extract the carrier mean free path even when it is comparable to the conductor length. Our model is in good agreement with the experimental work on copper nanowires by Pothier et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 3490 (1997)] and provides an elegant interpretation of the inhomogeneous thermal broadening observed in the local carrier distribution function as well as its scaling with external bias. Electrical transport properties of single bismuth nanowires
Due to its unique electronic properties bismuth is of enormous interest for studies on the nanoscale. In particular, when the object size is comparable to the mean free path of charge carriers le (~ 100 nm and ~ 400 μm at 300 and 4 K, respectively [1]), mesoscopic effects such as electron scattering at both surface [2] and grain boundaries [3] become significant. For investigating the influence...

The flux-pinning mechanism and activation energy of 10 wt % malic acid-doped MgB2 were investigated by measuring of the critical current density and resistivity as a function of magnetic field and temperature. A crossover field, Bsb, was observed from the single vortex to the small vortex bundle pinning regime. For the sintered sample, the temperature dependence of Bsb(T) at low temperature i...

We study the orbital magnetism of 2D lattices with chaotic motion of electrons withing a primitive cell. Using the temperature diagrammatic technique we evaluate the averaged value and rms fluctuation of magnetic response in the diffusive regime withing the model of non-interacting electrons. The fluctuations of magnetic susceptibility turn out to be large and at low temperature can be of the o...

The transport properties of nanoscaled objects can be very different from those of the corresponding bulk material due to the influence of finite-size and quantum-size effects in low-dimensional structures. In 1993, Hicks and Dresselhaus published theoretical investigations on transport properties of one-dimensional conductors, predicting a significantly enhanced thermoelectric efficiency [1]. ...

In recent years, semiconductor nanostructures have become the model systems of choice for investigation of electrical conduction on short length scales. Quantum transport is studied in a two dimensional electron gas because of the combination of a large Fermi wavelength and large mean free path. In the present work, a numerical method is implemented in order to contribute to the understanding ...
